Parkland Medical Center and Portsmouth Regional Hospital have joined forces to offer patients throughout New Hampshire the latest, most effective surgical weight loss options. Together, the two collaborate to meet the unique needs and concerns of bariatric surgery candidates and patients. The team consists of specially trained advanced laparoscopic surgeons: John P. Gens, MD, Kevin G. Looser, MD, and Cynthia Paciulli, MD, dieticians, physical therapists, and behavioral health experts, as well as representatives from other medical specialties.

Bariatric Surgery Program Accreditations
American College of Surgeons
Our Bariatric Surgery (Surgical Weight Loss) Program is accredited as a Level 2b facility by the Bariatric Surgery Center Network (BSCN) Accreditation Program of the American College of Surgeons (ACS). This designation means that our program has met the essential criteria that ensure it is fully capable of supporting a bariatric surgery care program and that its institutional performance meets the requirements outlined by the ACS BSCN Accreditation Program.
Accredited bariatric surgery centers provide not only the hospital resources necessary for optimal care of morbidly obese patients, but also the support and resources that are necessary to address the entire spectrum of care and needs of bariatric patients, from the pre-hospital phase through the postoperative care and treatment process.
To become accredited, Portsmouth Regional Hospital underwent an on-site verification by experienced bariatric surgeons, who review the center’s structure, process and quality of data using the current ACS Bariatric Surgery Center Network Accreditation Program Manual as a guideline in conducting the survey. Because high-quality surgical care requires documentation using reliable measurements of outcomes, accredited bariatric surgery centers are required to report their bariatric surgery outcomes data either to the American College of Surgeons National Surgical Quality Improvement Program (ACS NSQIP) or the College’s BSCN Database, using a Web-based data entry system.

Public Information Sessions
Public sessions are held throughout the year, giving patients the opportunity to learn first hand about the risks of obesity, hear detailed descriptions about their surgical options, and meet the surgeons and members of the bariatric team. These sessions are mandatory for anyone considering this program. All sessions begin at 6:30 p.m.
